Summary of a Michigan State University Study regarding storing and feeding hay as round bales

Storing and feeding hay as round bales is a popular management practice in the Midwest because of the low labor requirements compared to other harvested feed systems. The objective of this experiment was to determine the potential feeding loss associated with differing designs of bale feeders. One hundred and sixty cows were used to evaluate four feeder designs. The designs included cone, ring, cradle and trailer types. The waste from round-baled hay fed in these feeder types ranged from 3.5 to 14.6% of dry matter. Feeder type’s affect on wastage of hay from most to lease was: cradle > trailer > ring > cone.

Our Feeder Specifications:
Inside diameter - 7' 6"
Horizontal rings and vertical tubes – 14 Ga. 1.25 square tube
Steel Sheets – 16 Ga.
Number of openings – 16
Cone – 16 chains made from 3/16 proof coil chain – rated at 800 lbs. with a safety factor of 2 (Calculation – 2,000 lb. bale being held up by 16 chains = 2,000/16 = 125 lbs. per chain) This is well within the 800-lb. rating of the chain.
Finish – Industrial powder coating
Color – John Deere green (other colors available upon request)
Total weight - 474 lbs.
Patent Pending

Advantages:

  • Our unique proof coil chain insert allows us to simply disconnect the chain from one half of the feeder. Then nest the two halves of the feeder together for shipping. Most cone feeders have a round feeder on the bottom and a cone insert on the top. This is just more parts to ship and more parts to assemble.
  • Our customers tell us that with some fixed cone inserts the cattle can’t reach the center of the bale. If it is a tough bale the middle portion of the bale will stay sitting in the cone. With our proof coil chain insert cattle can move the chain around so that the bale moves and they can then eat the entire bale.
  • Each vertical tube that has a chain attached to it runs all the way to the ground. This means the load of the bale goes through the chain, through the tube and then directly to the ground. Even though we give you the option of having steel sheets along the bottom or having 2 extra rings at the bottom the load of the bale does not go through these.
  • Our feeder is powder coated and then all tubes are either capped or sealed to keep water out.

  • The Q&A on this Product
QUESTION:  What are the dimensions of this horse hay feeder? How high is the kick plate from the ground? How high is it to the TOP of the opening from the ground? My concern is with horses standing 16 hands. Will the rub their mane off while trying to feed?
ANSWER:  The inside diameter of the feeder is 92". The kick plate or bottom of the first opening is 23". The top of the opening is 65". The top of the feeder is 83". A horse standing 16 hands will not have an issue with rubbing their mane.
